There are alternative ways to generate electricity. The government of India also has been trying to influence people about the electricity from other natural resources like solar power. To generate electricity from solar power, government launched PM Surya Ghar Yojana, with this scheme you can install solar panels on roof.
The Indian government runs a variety of schemes for the people of the country. These policies are formulated keeping in mind different needs. One such scheme is the Surya Ghar Yojana, under which people receive subsidies for installing solar panels on their rooftops. In 2024, the Indian government launched the PM Surya Ghar Bijli Yojana, which provides government subsidies for installing solar panels on their rooftops, reducing costs and saving on electricity bills. To install solar panels under this scheme, it’s important to first understand the size of the roof.
How big the roof should be?
Generally, according to government guidelines, a 1 kilowatt solar panel requires at least 100 square feet of space. This means that the more power you need, the larger the roof. A family looking to install a 2 kilowatt solar system will need approximately 200 square feet of free space. For a 1 kilowatt system, approximately 300 square feet is required. It’s crucial that the solar panels on the roof receive adequate sunlight. Under the scheme, the government has given each family the freedom to choose a solar system based on their needs. Those who use more electricity can install larger panels, while smaller families can manage with smaller systems.
How to apply
To apply for the Surya Ghar Yojana, registration is required. To do this, visit the official website https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in/ and select your DISCOM (electricity distribution company). After submitting your application, a technical team visits the site, measures the roof, and grants approval. The government is also providing subsidies on solar panels under this scheme.
This significantly reduces people’s costs. For example, systems up to 3 kilowatts can receive up to 40 percent subsidy. This allows even ordinary people to easily benefit from installing solar panels.
