PM Surya Ghar Scheme: The Union Budget 2026 might unveil a significant update about the PM Surya Ghar Scheme. The government kicked off the PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme back in February 2024, but it was officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024. According to government officials speaking to Moneycontrol, there’s a strong focus on boosting the adoption of rooftop solar panels through this initiative. Additionally, the government is tackling grid-related issues to speed up the growth of renewable energy.
Target of 50-55 lakh rooftop solar installations in 2026
Union Renewable Energy Minister Prahlad Joshi mentioned in a recent interview with Moneycontrol that the government aims for 50-55 lakh rooftop solar installations by 2026. To reach this goal, there may be an announcement of increased funding for the scheme. Rooftop solar is crucial for enhancing renewable energy usage, which helps lower electricity costs for households and makes it easier for distribution companies to handle peak demand.
Union Budget 2025 allocates Rs 20,000 crore
In the Union Budget 2025, the government set aside ₹20,000 crore for the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. Joshi stated, “As for FY27, there are no hurdles. The Finance Ministry is providing all the support needed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. This aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision.” He added, “I can assure you that PM Surya Ghar, renewable energy, and the National Green Hydrogen Mission will be top priorities.”
Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, the government aims to reach 40 lakh families by March 2026. Officials indicated that the goal is to expand coverage to one crore families by 2027. As of December 9, 2025, 19.45 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed under this initiative, benefiting over 24.35 lakh families.
