We’re talking about the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which has provided relief from the hassle of electricity bills. According to government sources, since this scheme launched in February 2024, more than 2.5 million families have said goodbye to their high electricity bills, reducing their bills to zero.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in February 2024, offering a significant gift to the people of the country, especially families worried about high electricity bills. Under this scheme, the central government has set a target of installing solar panels in 1 crore homes by 2027, and it has been receiving a strong response since its inception.

The benefits offered under this scheme, one of the most prominent government initiatives of the Modi government, are making it quite popular. While the PM Surya Ghar Yojana provides 300 units of free electricity, the government also provides a substantial subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 for installing solar panels on your home’s roof.
PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme
Till now 25 lakh houses have been illuminated. If government sources are to be believed, by adopting this PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, more than 25 lakh families of the country have said goodbye to high electricity bills. With a strong subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 given through PM Surya Ghar, solar panels are lighting up these lakhs of houses across India, thereby providing relief, savings and clean energy all together. The number of beneficiaries receiving Zero Electricity Bill through this scheme is continuously increasing.

Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, you can use abundant electricity with ‘zero electricity bills’ for more than two decades by investing just once. In fact, the solar panels installed on rooftops under this government scheme typically have an estimated lifespan of around 25 years. You can install them under the scheme based on your consumption.
Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme, while 300 units of free electricity is given by the government, under this scheme, government subsidy is also available on installation of solar panels. The government is giving subsidy of Rs 30-60 thousand on installation of 1-2 kilowatt solar panel suitable for consumption of 0-150 units, 2-3 kilowatt required for consumption of 150-300 units of electricity or Rs 60-78 thousand on panel of more than three kilowatt.

How to apply?
- Go to the website https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in.
- Select the option ‘Apply for Rooftop Solar’ on the homepage.
- On the new page, select your state and electricity distribution company.
- After this enter electricity consumer number, mobile number and email.
- Login by entering consumer number and mobile on the new page.
- Now the form will open, where apply for RTS panel as per the guidelines.
- After this process you will get feasibility approval.
- After this you will be able to get the plant installed from a vendor registered with your DISCOM.
- After installation, you will have to apply for net meter along with plant details.
- Commissioning certificate will be issued after the meter is installed and inspected by DISCOM.
- Once it is issued, you will provide bank account details and cancelled cheque through the portal, in which the subsidy will be credited.
