Team India suffered a shocking ODI series defeat at the hands of New Zealand. New Zealand won the final ODI in Indore by 41 runs. This is New Zealand’s first ODI series win in India. While this result didn’t significantly impact Team India’s preparations, as the ODI World Cup is still about a year and a half away, this series has raised a question: is Ravindra Jadeja’s journey with Team India over?
Ravindra Jadeja’s Team India career end?
Over the past few months, questions have been raised about the careers of Team India’s two most decorated batsmen. After retiring from Test cricket last year, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were considered unlikely to survive in the ODI format. However, with their consistently excellent performances, these two veterans have demonstrated that surpassing them in this format is still not easy.

But while all the attention has been on Rohit and Kohli’s careers, Ravindra Jadeja’s performance in the ODI format is also being questioned. Jadeja, who has consistently performed well for Team India in Tests, has repeatedly failed to replicate that feat in ODI cricket. The ODI series against New Zealand was a nightmare for him. He failed to score any runs or take any wickets in the three matches of the series.

Jadeja scored just 43 runs in three matches of this series. His average was 14.33, and his strike rate was also a mere 66.15. Of the 22 players who batted for both teams in this series, only Mohammed Siraj (50) had a worse strike rate than Jadeja. Furthermore, Jadeja failed to end his 13-year wait in this series. The Indian all-rounder hasn’t scored a single half-century in the ODI format on home soil in the last 13 years.

But it’s not just his batting, Jadeja’s bowling has been even more troubling. He bowled a combined 23 overs in all three matches, yet failed to take a single wicket. He didn’t bowl a full 10 overs in any of these matches, conceding 141 runs at an economy rate of 6. Thus, he hasn’t taken a single wicket in six ODIs against New Zealand at home in his career.

Jadeja retired from T20 cricket after the World Cup, but he continues to perform well in Tests. Even here, his bowling performance has dipped slightly, but he continues to show strength with the bat. However, his performance in ODIs has steadily declined. In the Indore ODI, when Team India needed his batting prowess, he was dismissed after hitting a shot off a left-arm spinner.
