India has immense potential for solar energy. Due to abundant sunshine for most of the year, solar energy has emerged as the cheapest and cleanest option for the country. With this vision, the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme has been implemented so that millions of families in the country can become self-reliant in terms of energy.
What is the PM Surya Ghar Yojana?
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is a central government initiative aimed at connecting residential homes in the country to solar energy. Under this scheme, rooftop solar panels are installed on houses so that consumers can generate their own electricity. The scheme was launched in 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Its aim is not only to reduce electricity costs but also to protect the environment.
Under this scheme, the government is ensuring that common people do not face any financial difficulties in installing solar panels and that the process remains completely easy.
Main Benefits of the Scheme
Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, consumers can get up to approximately 300 units of free electricity every month. In addition, a direct subsidy is provided by the central government for installing the solar panel system. If a consumer generates more electricity than needed, the surplus can be sent to the grid, generating additional income. The entire application process is done through an online portal, ensuring transparency and saving time.
Subsidy Available under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana
The government provides subsidies based on the capacity of the solar system. If a person installs a 1 kW system, they receive assistance of approximately Rs. 30,000. A subsidy of approximately ₹60,000 is provided for a 2 kW system. For systems with a capacity of 3 kW or more, a maximum subsidy of up to ₹78,000 is available. In addition, several states like Delhi, Gujarat, and Rajasthan are offering their own additional subsidies, further reducing the cost for consumers.
Loan and EMI Facilities
For those who cannot afford a lump-sum payment, the government has also made easy loan facilities available. Loans are available at low-interest rates from government-approved banks, which can be repaid in easy EMIs. This allows middle-class and lower-income groups to also benefit from this scheme.
Eligibility for PM Surya Ghar Yojana
Only permanent residents of India who own a house with a rooftop are eligible for this scheme. The house should not already have a solar system installed. If a person lives in a rented house, the landlord’s consent and participation are required.
Documents Required for the Scheme
At the time of application, an Aadhaar card, the latest electricity bill for the house, bank account details, and proof of property ownership are required. All documents must be correct and up-to-date to avoid any delays in receiving the subsidy.
