New Traffic Rules: In light of the increasing traffic violations in the country, the government is now taking strict action. The Vehicle Conduct Department has issued a new draft notification, under which driving licenses can now be cancelled directly at the RTO level for violating traffic rules more than five times. This step is aimed at improving road safety and ensuring compliance. This rule will be implemented across the state once the final notification is issued.

How will the license cancellation process work?

Drivers with more than five memoranda registered against them will first receive a notice from the department. The notice will ask the driver why their driving license should not be cancelled. The driver will be given a full opportunity to present their case, but if the response is not satisfactory, the RTO will initiate necessary action. This process will be completely document-based and transparent.

3,000 Licenses Cancelled So Far

It should be noted that in Ahmedabad, the power to cancel a license was primarily dependent on information from the traffic police. For this reason, only two to three thousand driving licenses were previously revoked annually. However, according to statistics, there are over one lakh drivers who have received more than five memo notices. To address this imbalance, a new rule has been developed to ensure immediate action can be taken against a large number of serious violations.

License cancellation period

The period for which a driving license will be revoked depends on the type of memo and the driver’s behaviour. Typically, this period can be between three and nine months. If a driver has not paid the memo fee for several years or has serious traffic offences registered against them, the period can be extended. In cases involving accidents and endangering lives, licenses can also be permanently revoked. This year alone, pending memo amounts of over ₹13 crore have been reported.

Challan payments will be available online

For the convenience of drivers, the e-challan payment process has been simplified in the state. Now, through the Bharat Bill Payment System, drivers will be able to easily pay their challans using platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, the BHIM app, and YONO. An MoU has been signed between the state government and the State Bank of India to facilitate this facility, which will expedite the payment process and increase transparency.
