ITR Filing 2025

ITR Filing Guidelines: Big news for income tax payers. The Income Tax Department has rolled out new Income Tax Return (ITR) forms for the Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, bringing in some key changes aimed at making things easier for taxpayers and improving data accuracy. If you’re planning to file your return by July 31, 2026, it’s super important to get familiar with these new rules. The biggest updates involve your address and contact details.

Now, you’ll need to provide a secondary address

Last year, you only had to give one address in the ITR form. But according to research by Taxmann, a new field for a “secondary address” has been added to all forms, from ITR-1 to ITR-7. This means you’ll need to include an alternate address along with your main one.

Additionally, the sections for two mobile numbers and two email IDs have been updated to specify “primary” and “secondary” contact details. This change will help the department reach out to taxpayers more easily.

These updates are also beneficial for you.

1. Simplified Representative Assessment info: If someone else is filing your return for you, they won’t need to provide a ton of information anymore. The new form will only ask for three things:

– Name of the representative
– Email ID of the representative
– Contact number of the representative (previously, you had to provide many details like PAN, Aadhaar, and address, which are no longer required.)

2. Easier Capital Gains Reporting:

With the change in tax rates on July 23, 2024, during the financial year 2024-25, capital gains had to be reported in two parts (before and after July 23).

Now, that split has been removed in the new form. Since the same tax rate applies for the whole year for AY 2026-27, you won’t have to worry about reporting separate accounts based on the old and new rates.

Important things to note

It’s important to note that these new forms are for AY 2026-27 (FY 2025-26). Although the forms have been updated, you must still follow the existing provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961. The government’s focus is on making ITR filing “user-friendly.” The purpose of dividing secondary addresses and email addresses into primary and secondary categories is to reduce communication errors. Taxpayers are advised to keep a spare address and working mobile number ready in their records to avoid any hassle at the time of filing.
