UPI Rules Changed, How It Will Effect You Now?

: Do you also use UPI? Then here is some important news for you. From June 1, 2026, the rules for using UPI have changed, which will directly affect the users. Nowadays, there is no one left who does not use UPI. You must use it too. To make digital payments more secure, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has implemented a new verification feature.

New UPI Rules

Now, when making payments by scanning a QR code or entering a mobile number, the recipient’s verified name as registered with their bank will be displayed on the UPI app. This will help prevent fraudsters using fake names and false identities, and consumers will be able to accurately identify the beneficiary before sending money. Scammers often exploit this by entering fake names. Now, when you enter the number or use the scanner to send money, you’ll see the person’s real name (Official Registered Name) as it appears on their bank account.

Scanning the QR code will expose the fraudsters

After the new rule comes into effect, as soon as you scan a QR code at a shop or street vendor, the name of the bank account holder whose account the money is being transferred to will immediately flash on the screen. This will allow you to identify in an instant whether the QR code is genuine or a fraudster’s. The bank-registered name revealed, you can ensure you’re making a payment to the right person before entering the final UPI PIN. This transparency will further strengthen customer trust in the UPI ecosystem.

UPI makes history

The use of cashless transactions in the country is growing at an unprecedented pace. Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions in India hit an all-time high in May. In this month alone, a record Rs.29.90 lakh crore worth of digital payments were made across the country. This is a huge growth of 19 percent compared to the Rs 25.14 lakh crore transactions recorded in May last year (2025). These figures are a direct proof that everyone from rural areas to metro cities is relying on UPI payments, from rupee coins to lakh-rupee businesses.

Not only in terms of transaction value, but also in terms of the number of transactions, the month of May has also created a new record. While 18.67 billion (1,867 crore) transactions were recorded in May last year, this time a remarkable growth of 24 percent was recorded at 23.20 billion (2,320 crore) transactions. Financial experts analyze that the main reasons for this huge growth are the increase in domestic and international travel bookings due to the summer holidays in May, and the widespread use of digital payments in entertainment spending, shopping and small and large business transactions.
