This season’s IPL 2026 is already historic, as 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals opener, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, continues to rewrite the T20 books. After smashing an incredible record 97 off 29 balls in the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the young batting phenom has garnered the attention of the world, and now, has earned the ultimate compliment from former Australian captain and current Lucknow Super Giants head coach, Justin Langer.
In a heartfelt post that is now going viral on social media, the legendary Langer has admitted a shocking personal secret: he recently approached the young sensation to ask him for a selfie, something he has only ever done for two athletes in his life.
Langer’s Shocking Confession
The duo met on the field after a regular season game, with the 15-year-old prodigy dismantling the LSG bowling attack with a blistering 93 off 38 balls and helping Rajasthan to chase down a huge total with ease. Langer was on hand as the opposition coach, and despite the fact that the young batting sensation was in the middle of a live TV interview, the former Aussie skipper could not resist interrupting for a quick snap.
Recounting the hilarious story in a special online column, the veteran Langer was in awe of the 15-year-old’s raw power and amazing maturity on the pitch.
“Last week I did something I have only done twice in my life. I asked another athlete for a selfie,” he wrote. “The first time was for my childhood AFL hero, South Fremantle’s Stephen Michael… The second was a 15-year-old boy from a village in Bihar.”
Adding more detail, Langer stated that after more than 35 years in professional cricket, he simply cannot understand how he plays, and said the youngster is unlike anything he’s ever seen.

The Great Talent Debate
This praise from a legend has quickly led to a global debate on what “talent” really means, as clearly laid out in the above image. Langer stated that ‘talent’ is arguably the word that we hear most often but understand least, and that true talent is about more than just pure skill, it’s about the mental capacity of a player to perform under extreme pressure and adapt accordingly.
To illustrate this point, the Australian compared the young star to an incredible veteran story also unfolding simultaneously around the world. While the 15-year-old was shredding bowling attacks in India, 38-year-old Australian Rules Football star Scott Pendlebury was playing his 433rd game to break the all-time football record in Melbourne. Langer called the two athletes, on different continents and in different sports, as two completely different examples of the exact same word, ending his thought provoking post by asking: “Which version of talent moves you more – the gift, or the craft?”
History Books Rewritten
The 15-year-old’s mind-blowing numbers throughout this IPL season perfectly highlight Langer’s belief, as he leads the race for the Orange Cap and has smashed previous T20 record books, in some cases outdoing the best international cricketers the game has ever seen:
- Most Sixes: Broke the 10-year-old record of 59 sixes, hit by Chris Gayle in 2012, with a phenomenal 65.
- Powerplay Runs: Surpassed David Warner’s 2016 record of 467 Powerplay runs with an outstanding 490.
- The Elite 240+ Strike Club: Became the first player in T20 history to score over 600 runs in a tournament, striking at a ludicrous 242.85.
- Youngest Men’s Centurion: Official record-holder for the youngest player ever to score a century in men’s professional T20 cricket, shown in the image above.
What Lies Ahead
With a legend like Justin Langer personally championing his selfie and a nation rallying behind his raw talent, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the most feared batsman in the tournament right now. All eyes will be on the youngster as Rajasthan Royals look to secure a spot in the IPL 2026 final in their Qualifier 2 match against Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans.
