The fourth season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is just around the corner, and the league’s five teams are actively preparing for the upcoming competition. Amidst these preparations, new captains are being announced, and after several days of anticipation, the UP Warriorz have finally unveiled their new captain.

Who is the new captain for WPL 2026 season?

Awaiting their first title, the UP Warriorz have appointed legendary Australian batsman and former captain Meg Lanning as the team’s captain. Lanning, who previously captained the Delhi Capitals, will lead the UP Warriors in WPL 2026 and will strive to improve the team’s performance. The UP Warriors announced this on Sunday, January 4th, putting an end to days of speculation. Questions had been swirling about who would be the franchise’s captain this season.

Besides Lanning, the names of Indian star Deepti Sharma and England’s Sophie Ecclestone were also being considered. Ultimately, the franchise preferred Lanning’s experience and track record. This will be Lanning’s fourth consecutive season as captain of the WPL. Previously, she led Delhi Capitals in three seasons. Lanning, who led Australia to six World Cup titles, also led Delhi to the finals of all three WPL seasons, but failed to win a single title. However, not only UP, but two other franchises also announced new captains before them.

Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner will lead the Gujarat Giants in the fourth season of the WPL, starting January 9th. Meanwhile, the Delhi Capitals have filled the void left by Lanning’s departure by appointing Indian star Jemimah Rodriguez as captain.
