Chhath Puja Day 3 – Today, Monday, October 27, 2025, is the third and most special day of Chhath, the great festival of folk faith. It is known as ‘Sandhya Arghya’. This evening, fasting mothers and devotees will stand on the banks of a river or pond and offer arghya (water) to the setting Sun God.  Did you know? This is the most special feature!

While most festivals and fasts involve worshipping the rising Sun, Chhath Puja has a unique tradition of offering arghya to the setting Sun. This teaches us that every ups and downs in life (darkness after sunset) should be respected, because it is not just the end, but also the beginning of a new tomorrow (sunrise the next day). Therefore, this day is considered a special symbol of faith and devotion.

Grand preparations for the puja: When faith descends on the ghats, a different kind of excitement is seen in every home before Sandhya Arghya. Fasting women diligently decorate the bamboo basket (dala). Thekua, rice laddus (kasar), bananas, sugarcane, coconuts, and various seasonal fruits are placed in this basket.

Then, all family members, carrying these puja materials on their heads, approach the Chhath Ghat or pond with devotion. Just before sunset, the fasting women stand in the water and meditate on the Sun God, then ritually offer water and milk to the setting sun.  After this, they circumambulate the place five times and pray to Chhathi Maiya and Sun God for the happiness, prosperity, health and long life of the children of the family.
