Users all over the world are having trouble logging into OpenAI services due to a wide outage affecting ChatGPT, APIs, and developers’ tools. Thousands of complaints have appeared on outage tracking websites and social media since this morning with users being logged out, conversations freezing, missing chat history and seeing a “network error”.
The outage seemed to hit most hard around morning work hours, disrupting casual users and professionals who utilize the service for coding, writing, studies, and more. India has reportedly experienced a huge influx of user reports from cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Delhi.
Users complaining of logging
Many are failing to log into their accounts entirely and when logged in can’t seem to be able to view any chats with blank pages or infinite loading loops appearing. In many instances prompts fail and return repeated messages such as “Something went wrong”.
The disappearance of saved chat history from sidebar has become a huge problem especially for professionals storing work conversations and drafts.
Developers are also experiencing issues with APIs
OpenAI is also facing problems with API services and many developers have reported high rates of API failure and unreliability, including delayed, failing responses, and unexpected rate-limiting errors and authentication failures.
Codex features and code-generation tools are suffering from partial outages which are affecting the workflow of software engineers relying on such services.
OpenAI Status Page
OpenAI has addressed the issue through its system monitoring portal, acknowledging the current issue and stating that engineering teams are working to resolve it and restore stability to backend services.
Service status at present
- ChatGPT Web: Major outage impacting login, frozen conversations, and deleted histories.
- ChatGPT mobile apps: Unreliable prompts, failed synchronization, and lagging responses on both Android and iOS.
- OpenAI API Platform: High error rates leading to API disconnections and service lag, developers experiencing these issues.
- Codex Services: Partial outage, unstable performance and interruptions to code generation.
Social media flooded with user reports
Users have rushed to platforms such as X and Reddit to share their frustrations and screenshots of the outage. Professionals relying on OpenAI for automated pipelines or code assistance within workflows, have reported work disruptions. Some users reported seeing error messages such as “too many concurrent requests” despite having a single active conversation running, hinting at overloaded authentication systems.
What you can do
While OpenAI addresses the issues, users are advised against repeatedly trying to log out of their accounts. Each login attempt will further overload already unstable servers. Historically such outages have resolved themselves within a matter of hours but the exact resolution timeline remains unconfirmed.
