Ration Card- Major setback for some Ration Card holders. Karnataka is set to take a major step regarding ration cards. The state Food and Civil Supplies Department has indicated that over 1.2 million BPL (Below Poverty Line) cards may be cancelled.

The reason is clear, these cards have ended up in the hands of people who don’t actually need them. Many ineligible people have been receiving cheap rations through BPL cards for years, while poor and needy families have been left out.

Investigations have revealed that even those who own large tracts of land, luxurious houses, and luxury cars continue to hold BPL cards. Many people don’t even use the rations. In light of such cases, there has long been a demand to remove ineligible individuals and issue BPL cards only to eligible individuals. Now, the government has decided to take concrete steps in this direction.

Minister KH Muniyappa stated that the department is preparing to remove such card holders. The process of cancellation will begin soon after identifying ineligible card holders. He stated that this step will provide relief to poor families who have previously been denied benefits despite being eligible.

Eligibility for issuing BPL card

  1. There should not be any government job in the family.
  2. There should not be more than three hectares of land in rural areas.
  3. In urban areas, the house should not be more than 1,000 square feet.
  4. The family should not have a four-wheeler.
  5. Annual income should not exceed Rs 1.20 lakh.

In practice, these rules were not properly followed. As a result, a large number of ineligible people were able to obtain BPL cards. Now that the department is preparing to take strict action, it is hoped that in the future, only truly needy families will receive the benefits of cheap rations and government schemes. This will provide relief to millions of poor people who have previously been deprived due to systemic flaws.
