Just before the auspicious occasion of Diwali, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a historic and significant gift to millions of women in the state. According to media reports, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced free gas cylinders under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PM-Ujjwala Yojana). This significant initiative will directly benefit approximately 18.6 million women in the state. This decision will greatly help alleviate the financial burden on women during the festive season.

When will the free cylinders be available? Complete distribution timeline
The Yogi government plans to provide free cylinders to women twice a year. This benefit will be available only to women who are already beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PM-Ujjwala Yojana). The free cylinders will be distributed in two phases. The first phase will be between October 2025 and December 2025, covering major festivals like Diwali and Chhath Puja. The second phase will be between January 2026 and March 2026, providing relief during other major festivals like Holi. Beneficiaries will receive the subsidy or full deposit amount for a 14.2 kg cylinder directly transferred to their account.
These women will not receive the benefit of free cylinders

To avail the free cylinder scheme, certain eligibility criteria must be met. This scheme is only for Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries. Benefits will be available only to women registered under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. Importantly, if a beneficiary has not yet verified their Aadhaar card, they will not be considered eligible for the free cylinder.
Aadhaar verification is Necessary
Aadhaar verification is crucial for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The government is strictly enforcing Aadhaar verification to prevent corruption and ensure benefits reach genuine beneficiaries. Therefore, all eligible women should immediately update and link their Aadhaar and bank accounts. This historic decision is a major step towards economic independence for women in Uttar Pradesh.
