Government’s Big Move: Certain Electric Vehicles Now Exempt from Driving License Rules

Driving without a driver’s license (DL) in India can be costly and dangerous. If you’re stopped by traffic police for not having a license, you could face a hefty fine. But did you know that there are certain vehicles on the road that don’t require a driver’s license to operate? The central government is running several schemes to promote electric vehicles, and under these schemes, electric vehicles have been granted this significant exemption, subject to certain conditions.

Which vehicles don’t require a license to operate

Every vehicle on the road must comply with traffic rules and regulations. However, electric vehicles are exempt from certain conditions. Some electric vehicles can be driven without a driver’s license.

Conditions for Driving Without a License

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways regulations, electric vehicles with a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour do not require a driver’s license or registration to operate on the road. This simply means that low-speed e-scooters and e-bikes are included in this category. This exemption is a huge benefit for school and college-age children and those traveling short distances.
