DA Hike Update – Minimum Salary May Hit ₹54,000, How to Calculate 8th Pay Commission Arrears

8th Pay Commission: Millions of central government employees and pensioners are awaiting the announcement of the dearness allowance and dearness relief increase for January 2026. The Federation of National Postal Organisations has submitted a memorandum to the National Council, Joint Consultative Mechanism – Staff Side, recommending that the fitment factor for the 8th Pay Commission be set at 3.0-3.25. If approved, the minimum basic salary could increase by ₹18,000 to approximately ₹54,000.

  • Dearness Allowance Revised Twice
  • A Special Formula for Determining Dearness Allowance
  • How is the arrears calculated?

Typically, the government announces a DA increase around major festivals like Holi. However, this year, this did not happen. This year, even after Holi, there has been no official announcement. Consequently, the question lingers in people’s minds: when will the DA increase be announced?

Dearness Allowance Revised Twice
The government revises its dearness allowance twice a year. The first revision takes effect in January, and the second in July. Currently, central government employees receive a dearness allowance at 58%. Based on the latest inflation data, DA is estimated to increase by approximately 2% in January 2026. If this happens, employees’ DA will increase from 58% to approximately 60%.

A Special Formula for Determining Dearness Allowance

This formula uses the average of the Consumer Price Index for industrial workers for the past 12 months. According to this formula, a fixed base value is subtracted from the 12-month average index, then divided by that base value and multiplied by 100 to arrive at the DA percentage.

How is the arrears calculated?

New basic pay – old basic pay = monthly difference. This difference is then multiplied by the number of months. The difference in DA, HRA, and other allowances is also added.

Who will benefit how much?

Group A officers: Arrears of approximately ₹12–15 lakh may be received.
Group B employees: Up to ₹7–9 lakh.
Group C employees: Up to ₹5–6 lakh.
Group D employees: Up to ₹4 lakh.

There has been no official confirmation from the government regarding the deadline and fitment factor. If the 8th Pay Commission is implemented from January 2027, a substantial amount will be credited to the accounts of central government employees.
