He smashed eight sixes and nine fours to reach his 37th List A century. But Rohit didn’t stop after scoring a century, scoring 155 runs off just 94 balls. Batting first, Sikkim set a target of 237 runs for Mumbai, which Mumbai chased down in the 31st over. This was also Rohit Sharma’s fastest century in List A cricket, breaking his previous record. His previous best ODI century came off 63 balls against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi in 2023. Thousands of spectators arrived before the first ball was bowled to catch a glimpse of the superstar batsman. During the first innings, chants of “Rohit, Rohit” and “Mumbai Cha Raja” echoed through the stadium as Rohit was fielding.
Rohit didn’t disappoint with the bat. He began his innings with a brilliant pull shot that sailed over mid-wicket for a boundary. He then batted with his trademark ease, completely dominating the relatively inexperienced Sikkim bowling attack. With every shot he hit, the stadium’s noise levels skyrocketed. The atmosphere felt like an international match, and the 37-year-old Rohit was completely in the spotlight.
Rohit was seen repeatedly coming out of his crease to attack the bowlers. A video of him sweeping one ball and sending it out of the stadium quickly went viral on social media. As Rohit neared his century, more spectators began to arrive. As the stands filled up, some fans were seen climbing nearby trees and structures to watch him reach his century.
Rohit Sharma is in excellent form in ODI cricket. Since returning to international cricket in October after a four-month break, he has scored 348 runs in six matches, including a century and three half-centuries. After retiring from Test cricket earlier this year and deciding to play only one format, questions were raised about his match fitness and rhythm. However, Rohit worked hard on his fitness and answered all the critics by returning to his old rhythm with the bat.
