Iyer’s continuation as captain after the VHT league stage will depend on whether the BCCI declares him fit for international duty. Iyer has been included in the squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting in Baroda on January 11.
While announcing the ODI squad recently, the BCCI stated that Iyer’s fitness will be assessed at the Centre of Excellence and if declared fit, he will be included in the ODI squad. If Iyer is cleared to return to international cricket, the Cricket Association will have to appoint a replacement captain for the VHT Knockouts, which begin on January 12. MCA Secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar said, “We will make a decision once the situation becomes clearer.”
