After losing the first Test of the two-match series against South Africa, the Indian team’s hopes of reaching the final of the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) have suffered a major setback. India has won only one series out of three so far. The defeat in the first Test against South Africa means that India cannot win the series now. Let us tell you that the Indian team has crossed half of the 2025-27 WTC cycle so far, but during this period, Team India has achieved only one series win. India had defeated West Indies 2-0 earlier this year, while in the overseas Test series against England, the Indian team was successful in drawing the series 2-2.
Will India able to reach in WTC Final?
Currently, India are fourth in the WTC 2025-27 points table, having played eight matches, with four wins and three losses. The Gill-led team has a win percentage of 54.17.
India now has 10 matches remaining, including the second Test of the ongoing series against South Africa in Guwahati. Next year, the Indian team will play two two-match series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. After that, they will conclude their campaign in the next season of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a five-match series at home against Australia.
India’s chances of reaching the final are now very clear. Much will depend on the teams’ performances, but it is too early to make any calculations based on the results of other matches, as all teams are still in the race. However, based on the teams’ performance in qualifying in the last three editions, India will now have to make every effort to win their upcoming series.
What India needs to do to qualify for the finals
- To qualify for the WTC Final, India must strive to reach above 65%. They must do everything possible to win eight of their remaining 10 matches.
- At the same time, with six wins and four draws, India will reach above the 65 win percentage mark (68.52).
- If India loses two matches and draws one, its win percentage will be 64.81.
- Three losses and a draw would take India’s win percentage below 60. Therefore, the Indian team will have to win more than three Test series at any cost.
