New Delhi: The situation in Iran is once again spiralling out of control, with the army reportedly targeting civilians. Crowds of people have taken to the streets to protest against rising inflation and the faltering economy. The protesters chanted slogans against the Islamic regime led by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Iranian army cracked down on the protesters, resulting in 35 deaths. More than 1,200 protesters have been detained. The protesters continued to chant slogans against the Islamic government, including “Death to Khamenei” and “The mullahs must leave the country.”
The Iranian government has refused to acknowledge the current protests as a political mass movement. The Khamenei government has instead described it as a foreign conspiracy. The death toll was revealed in a report.
Protests in 27 Provinces
According to a report, 29 protesters, 4 children, and 2 members of the Iranian security forces have been killed. More than 250 protests have been recorded so far. These figures were provided by the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency.
The agency relies on a network of activists operating within Iran for its reporting and has provided accurate information during past periods of unrest. Fars News Agency, considered close to Iran’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported late Monday that 250 police officers and 45 members of the Basij militia were also injured in the protests.
