Man runs home for 8 years using 1000 old laptop batteries: The ingenious thought process of a man has taken everyone by surprise by powering his house completely with recycled laptop batteries for eight years. Rather than throwing away old gadgets, he devised an electricity system that is cheaper and ensures sustainability. His idea demonstrates how old gadgets can be made to accomplish something much more valuable than waste—such as powering a whole house for years.

How Laptop Batteries Were Used

This brilliant idea was conceived by a technology buff named Glubox. He gathered about 1,000 old laptop batteries and paired them with 7,000-watt solar panels. This setup powers his home without the help of conventional electricity providers. The venture began in November 2016 after witnessing someone powering an electric bike using PC batteries. Guided by this, he started with a 1.4 kW solar panel and a 24V 460Ah forklift battery. Gradually, he modeled it into a full home power system.

System Overhaul Over Time

The original setup was a small shack. But it became a well-established and efficient power solution. It now comprises more than 1,000 recycled laptop batteries, a 7,000-watt solar panel, a battery rack made to order, high-tech 440W solar panels for winter use, and a Venus GX system for data monitoring. The storage capacity, also 7 kWh previously, is now 56 kWh. The whole setup is mounted 50 meters away from the house in a standalone hanger for safety and efficiency.

Total Cost of the Project

This system cost approximately €10,000 to install. Although it can be costly up front, it is significantly less expensive and ecologically friendly over time compared to traditional electricity. A lot of electronic waste is produced in Europe each year but very little gets recycled. In addition to being cost-saving, this system eliminates environmental damage.

What Inspired the Idea

Glubox was motivated when he saw someone charge an electric bicycle using recycled PC batteries. He was driven by the urge to investigate the idea with laptop batteries, which otherwise would be waste despite holding a lot of useful energy. His curiosity and environmentalist nature played key roles in the success of the project.

Why This Idea Matters Today

This innovation is in line with the European Union’s 2020 “Circular Economy” policy of recycling used waste instead of discarding it.
