Most states celebrated Diwali on October 20th, but some places are celebrating it today, October 21st. Today is Diwali in Maharashtra, and since the stock exchanges (BSE and NSE) are located in Mumbai, if you’re wondering if the stock exchanges are open today, know that today, October 21st, is a holiday for the stock exchanges. Normal trading will not take place today, but Muhurat trading will certainly occur.
Will it remain close?
This means that even though the market will not be open as usual, a special trading session will be held to mark the special occasion of Diwali. This tradition is considered auspicious when investments are made during the Lakshmi Pujan. Both BSE and NSE had already clarified that Muhurat trading would take place on October 21, 2025, which is a short but very special trading session of one hour.
This year, Muhurat trading will be held from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm. Before this, there will be a pre-opening session from 1:30 pm to 1:45 pm, in which preparations for trading are made. Muhurat trading is a long-standing tradition in the stock market, performed annually on Diwali. This day marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year (this year, Vikram Samvat 2082) and is considered a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Therefore, investors, both large and small, across the country make an auspicious start by investing on this day.
Tomorrow to remain close?
During this time, trading is possible across equity, derivatives, currency, commodities, and other segments. This is why even though the markets are closed, trading remains a festival of activity today. The day after Diwali, is a holiday on October 22nd. This festival is especially celebrated in Maharashtra and Karnataka, and the markets will be closed on this day as well. This means that, except for Muhurat trading, there will be a two-day break in trading this week, October 21st and 22nd. Ahead of Diwali, on Monday, October 20th, the stock market closed in the green. The Sensex rose 411 points to 84,363, and the Nifty gained 133 points to close at 25,843. The market saw gains for the fourth consecutive day.
