Railway Rules: Indian Railways is rolling out some big changes to train ticket booking rules starting in 2025, all aimed at making things easier and more transparent for passengers. These updates include better allocation of lower berths, set sleeping hours, and a shorter advance reservation period.
New policy on lower berths
The Railways is still focusing on giving priority for lower berths to senior citizens, women over 45, and pregnant women. If a lower berth isn’t available when you book your ticket, you’ll get assigned an upper or middle berth instead. If a lower berth opens up during the trip, the TTE can offer it to someone eligible. Plus, when booking online, there’s an option to only book tickets if a lower berth is available.
In reserved coaches, the sleeping hours will be from 10 pm to 6 am. During these hours, only those in lower berths can sleep on their berths, while everyone else needs to stay seated during the day. RAC ticket holders will also benefit from a special seat-sharing arrangement during the day.
Shorter advance reservation period
Before, you could book tickets up to 120 days in advance, but now that’s been cut down to 60 days. This change is expected to streamline the booking process and boost the chances of getting tickets, while also helping to reduce cancellations.
Boost in digital services
The Railways has introduced the RailOne app, which brings all ticket booking services together in one spot, making it even simpler to book. Passengers are encouraged to take full advantage of the options available when booking to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey.
