New Delhi Railway Station: A decision has been made to fully revamp New Delhi Railway Station. The Rail Land Development Authority has initiated redevelopment efforts, which are expected to last around four years. Currently, construction is underway on the Paharganj side of the station, and enhancements to the platforms are also in progress.
To alleviate train congestion and passenger crowding at the station during the construction phase, the Railways plans to relocate about 30 trains to other stations within Delhi. A finalized list of these trains and their new destinations has been prepared. Senior railway officials have submitted this proposal to the Railway Board. Once the Board gives its approval, these trains will start operating from their new designated stations instead of New Delhi.
Officials indicate that during significant festivals such as Diwali and Chhath Puja, stations frequently face heavy passenger traffic. Therefore, it may be possible to secure permission to shift these trains prior to the festive season to prevent any inconvenience for passengers.
What will the plan entail?
According to the new plan, the departure stations for several key trains have been altered. These trains will now depart from Anand Vihar Railway Station rather than New Delhi.
- Shatabdi Express (12001-02) from New Delhi to Rani Kamlapati, Taj Express (12279-80) to Agra, and Dr. Ambedkar Nagar Superfast (20155-56) are now set to operate from Hazrat Nizamuddin station.
- Significant trains such as Dehradun Shatabdi (12017-18), Kathgodam Shatabdi (12039-40), and Prayagraj Humsafar Express (12275-76) are proposed to run from Anand Vihar Railway Station instead of New Delhi.
- Poorva Express to Howrah, Vaishali Express to Lalitpur, and Superfast Express to Banaras are scheduled to operate from Shakur Basti station.
- Safdarjung station may become the new destination for special trains heading towards Barauni and Darbhanga in Bihar.
Passengers will have to go to the new station
New Delhi Railway Station is considered one of the most important stations in the country, with thousands of passengers traveling through it daily on hundreds of trains. This major transformation will require passengers to travel to new stations to catch their trains. This will ensure a seamless transformation of New Delhi Station to a world-class standard.
