Mukhyamantri Mawan Dhiyaan Satkar Yojana: Good news for women. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab announced a new initiative for women on Sunday. Through this initiative, women will receive Rs 1,000 each month, while those from the Scheduled Caste (SC) category will get Rs 1,500 monthly. Offering a monthly support of Rs 1,000 to women was a significant promise made by AAP during the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.
Punjab’s Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema presented the budget for 2026-27 in the state assembly, which amounts to Rs 2.60 lakh crore. He introduced the “Mukhya Mantri Mawan Dhiyaan Satkar Yojana” (Chief Minister Mother-Daughter Felicitation Scheme). Under this scheme, the state government will directly deposit funds into women’s accounts.
The Bhagwant Mann government initiated this new program nearly four years after taking office in Punjab. Cheema stated that the government will deposit Rs 1,500 each month into the accounts of women from the Scheduled Caste community. This announcement coincided with International Women’s Day, marking the first time the state budget has been presented on a Sunday.
Eligibility Criteria
Punjab’s Finance Minister characterized the scheme as the world’s first ‘universal cash transfer’ program for women. He mentioned, “Every woman over the age of 18 in Punjab will qualify for the scheme. The only exceptions are current or former government employees, former and current MPs/MLAs, and income tax payers.” According to Cheema, women who receive social security pensions (including old age, widow, or disability pensions) will also be eligible for the scheme. He asserted that approximately 97 percent of adult women in Punjab will benefit from it.
9300 crore rupees will be spent on the scheme in FY27
The initiative aims to promote women’s economic independence, strengthen their role in household decisions, improve health and nutrition levels, and encourage girls’ higher education and aspirations. Cheema has allocated a budget of ₹9,300 crore for the 2026-27 fiscal year to implement the scheme in a transparent and timely manner. This is the Aam Aadmi Party government’s last budget in Punjab before the assembly elections scheduled for early 2027.
