The subsidy benefit of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) will be available in the current financial year as well. The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday gave fresh clearance to the scheme. As a result, a subsidy of Rs 300 will be available on a 14.2 kg liquid petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder under PMUY.
Target LPG subsidy for PMUY customers
This subsidy will be applicable for 9 refills (pro-rata for 5 kg cylinders) per year in the financial year 2025-26, with a total cost of Rs 12,000 crore. Remember, India depends on imports for about 60 percent of its LPG demand. The government ensures affordable LPG to protect PMUY users from global price hikes.
That is why in May 2022, a subsidy of Rs 200 was started for every 14.2 kg cylinder, which allows up to 12 refills in a year. In October 2023, this target subsidy was increased to ₹300 per cylinder, which is still valid for up to 12 refills per year. Which has now been increased to 9 cylinders.
LPG usage increases among PMUY households
Statistics show that there has been a noticeable improvement in LPG usage among PMUY beneficiaries. The per capita consumption (PCC), which was around 3 refills in 2019-20 and 3.68 refills in 2022-23, has increased to around 4.47 refills in 2024-25.

What are the benefits provided?
Under Ujjwala 2.0, the first refill and an oven are provided free of cost. The entire cost of these items is borne by the government or the oil marketing companies. So, the beneficiaries do not have to pay anything for the initial setup.
Originally, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was created by the Modi government for such families who cannot afford to buy a regular gas cylinder. That is why the subsidy on the cylinder has been maintained this time too.
