IndiGo Crisis: There’s some relief for passengers affected by the operational crisis that hit IndiGo flights in the first week of December. The airline has announced that passengers affected by flight cancellations will receive a travel voucher worth Rs 10,000. These vouchers will be issued starting Friday and can be used on any IndiGo flight within the next 12 months.

Additionally, passengers whose flights were cancelled within 24 hours of their scheduled departure time will receive compensation ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000. The amount will depend on the flight’s block time. This payment will be made in accordance with regulations established by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Refund process also ongoing

IndiGo says that refunds for most of the cancelled flights have already been issued to passengers. Passengers who have not yet received their refunds will receive them soon. Refunds for tickets booked through travel agents or online platforms are also being processed.

IndiGo will contact passengers

Starting December 26th, IndiGo’s team will begin contacting passengers whose contact details are available with the airline. For those who booked tickets through travel agents or partner platforms, IndiGo is contacting the relevant agencies to gather details. Once the details are received, passengers will be directly issued travel vouchers.

If a passenger cannot be contacted, IndiGo will launch a separate webpage from January 1 where passengers can claim the voucher by entering their flight details.

What was the whole problem?

This operational crisis, which began on December 2nd, lasted for approximately 10 days. Thousands of passengers were stranded at airports for hours, particularly between December 3rd and 5th. Over 2,000 flights were cancelled in a week. Cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad were the worst affected. This was due to pilots’ inability to properly implement the new duty rules.

Given the seriousness of the matter, the Ministry of Civil Aviation reduced IndiGo’s winter schedule by 10% and imposed a cap on ticket prices. The DGCA has also issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo’s CEO, and a high-level committee is investigating the matter.
