How to Apply for a Duplicate RC: The most important document for vehicle ownership in India is the Registration Certificate (RC). It is legal proof of vehicle ownership, stating that a motorcycle, car, or other vehicle is actually registered in the name of the person who purchased it. Driving without an RC in the country is a legal offense and can result in a fine. However, if your RC is lost, stolen, or damaged, there’s no need to worry. Now, you can apply for a duplicate RC online from the comfort of your home.

What is a Vehicle Registration Certificate?

A Registration Certificate (RC) is a government document that certifies the vehicle and its owner. It contains the vehicle’s engine number, chassis number, registration number, registration date, and owner’s name. This document proves that the vehicle is roadworthy and properly registered with the RTO.

What documents will be required?

Before applying for a duplicate RC, certain essential documents must be prepared. These include a police certificate, Form 26, a copy of the lost RC, an insurance certificate, identity and address proof, a PUC certificate, pencil markings of the engine and chassis numbers, and tax clearance for commercial vehicles. These documents are required for both online and offline applications.

Applying for a Duplicate RC Online

The easiest way to obtain a duplicate RC is through the Ministry of Transport’s website, parivahan.gov.in. Go to the website and select the “Issue of Duplicate RC” option in the “RC Services” section. Enter the vehicle details, upload the required documents, and pay the prescribed fee online. After the process is completed, the application status can be checked on the website. The duplicate RC is sent to your address by post within a few days.

Offline Application Method

If you prefer the offline process, you can apply by visiting your nearest RTO office. Fill out Form 26, which requires information such as the vehicle number, engine number, and chassis number. Submit the required documents and fees. Once the application is accepted, the RTO completes the process and mails a duplicate RC to your address.

What to do if your RC is lost?

If your RC is stolen or lost, file a complaint at the nearest police station first. A copy of the police report must be submitted to the RTO at the time of application. This document proves that your RC is indeed lost and cannot be misused.

Why is a Duplicate RC Necessary?

Obtaining a duplicate RC can help prevent any vehicle-related problems. This document is required during insurance claims, vehicle sales, and traffic inspections. Without it, you may face problems such as fines or vehicle seizure.
