Passport Address Update: A passport is the most important document for international travel, studies, or settling in another country. A passport is issued by the government and proves your identity and citizenship. A visa, on the other hand, is permission from the government of another country that allows you to enter, reside, or work there.

If you have recently moved, whether within the same city or to a different city, it is crucial to update your new address on your passport. Having a passport with an old address can cause problems during police verification, visa applications, or international travel. It can also sometimes cause difficulties during checks at embassies or consulates.

The Process for Changing Your Address on Your Passport

The process for changing your address on your passport can be completed both online and offline. The application is submitted online, but it is necessary to visit a Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra for document verification.

For the online process, you first need to visit the passportindia.gov.in website. If you are a new user, you need to register and then log in. After that, you need to go to the option for reissuing a passport and select the option to change personal information. Here, you should fill in the new address exactly as it appears on your address proof.

After this, you need to upload a copy of your Aadhaar card, electricity bill, or any other valid address proof. Then, you need to pay the passport fee online. The fee is ₹1,500 for a 36-page passport and ₹2,000 for a 60-page passport. After paying the fee, you need to book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra.

On the day of the appointment, it is necessary to carry the application receipt, your old passport, a self-attested copy of the new address proof, and a passport-size photograph. If you have changed cities, police verification may also be required.

Documents Required

For address updates, documents such as Aadhaar card, Voter ID, electricity or water bill, gas connection bill, rent agreement, bank statement, or spouse’s passport are considered valid. Any of these documents must be recent and accurate.

Police will conduct address verification

Police verification is a crucial part of the passport process. The passport office sends your information to the local police station. A police officer then visits your stated address to verify the documents. After the verification is complete, the passport is usually sent to your address within 3 to 7 days.
