January Bank Holiday: When Banks Will Be Closed and What Customers Should Know

Bank Holiday January: Big news for bank customers. Banks will be shut for up to 16 days nationwide in January 2026, but this can differ by state. They’re also closed on weekends. Specifically, banks are closed every Sunday and on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. So, they’ll be closed on January 4, 11, 18, and 25 for Sundays, and on January 10 and 24 for the second and fourth Saturdays. This list of bank holidays comes from the RBI.

Major Bank Holidays in January 2026

January 1: Banks will be closed in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and more for New Year/Gaan-Singai.

January 2: New Year/Manam Jayanti is observed in Mizoram and Kerala. January 3: Hazrat Ali’s birthday is celebrated in Uttar Pradesh.

January 12: Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary is recognized in West Bengal.

January 26: Banks will be closed all over India for Republic Day.

In Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), banks will be closed on January 3 (Hazrat Ali’s birthday) and January 26, along with the usual weekend closures. However, digital banking and UPI services will still be available.
