Tata EV: Electric vehicles are picking up strong pace in India, and July 2025 was another month of rapid expansion. With fresh models, growing lineups, and greater consumer acceptance, the leading automakers are constantly driving the EV wave forward. The top five names are spearheading this shift with steady monthly volumes and tactical new launches.
Tata Motors
Tata Motors retained the leadership with 5,972 electric cars retailed in July 2025. This provided it with nearly 40 per cent market share. The launch of the Harrier EV supported its volumes, keeping the brand the segment leader. Tata is continuing to derive strength from its robust EV portfolio and countrywide reach. The brand’s consistent performance also points towards increasing customer faith in its electric cars.
MG Motor
JSW MG followed with 5,013 units retailed, capturing 33 per cent of the EV segment in July. The Windsor EV has contributed significantly to sales. MG also introduced new high-end models such as the M9 and Cyberster to its catalog. These new models drew more consumers seeking sophisticated features and attractive designs. MG is now a force to reckon with against Tata in the electric market.
Mahindra
Mahindra’s EV business clocked 2,789 units in the previous month. This is a whopping 435 per cent jump from July 2024. The dramatic increase was on account of its new electric range. But there was a 13 per cent drop as compared to June, indicating a slight normalization of monthly performance. Still, Mahindra has gained a 21.6 per cent market share of the EV space for FY26 till date, indicating increasing influence.
Hyundai
Hyundai dispatched 602 electric cars in July, up an 11 per cent rise from the last month. Although the numbers are small, Hyundai has demonstrated steady progress. Its continued growth is a sign of long-term potential in the electric market. As more models arrive, Hyundai can slowly increase its EV presence in India.
BYD
BYD registered 453 EV sales in July, ten per cent lower than the previous month. Nonetheless, the Chinese brand registered 27 per cent growth compared to the same month last year. BYD is a potential name to watch in India’s EV market due to its international experience and innovative offerings. The brand is likely to remain competitive in the next few months.
Other Brands in the Market
BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Citroën each had lower volumes but were pretty interesting in terms of trends. BMW managed 225 units, nearly three times its July 2024 performance. Mercedes-Benz recorded 85 units with consistent year-over-year growth. Citroën recorded only 41 units sold, experiencing steep declines both month-to-month and year-over-year.
