Vastu Niyam: Vastu Shastra is considered ancient Indian knowledge that teaches us which direction and methods a home or any other space should be constructed in to maintain positive energy and peace. Just as our bodies need food and rest for good health, a home also requires proper direction and balance to maintain positive energy.

Five elements are described in Vastu.

  1. Earth is associated with the foundation and stability of a home.
  2. Where there is water, there is life. Vastu Shastra states that water-related items should be placed in the northeast direction.
  3. Fire is considered a symbol of power and energy. Therefore, the kitchen should be located to the southeast.
  4. Pure air helps circulate energy in a home; therefore, windows should always face the northwest.
  5. The sky influences the centre of a home. Therefore, the centre of a house should always be kept open and clean.

Why is it essential to consider directions when constructing a home?

  1. The sun rises from the east. Therefore, having windows and doors in this direction brings light into the house.
  2. The north is considered Kubera’s direction.
  3. The south direction is associated with stability and should be located here.
  4. The west direction is associated with relaxation and balance. Therefore, having a children’s room in this direction is considered auspicious.

These Vastu rules will change the energy of the house

  1. The main entrance of the house should always face east or north. Doing so always brings light and positive energy into the house.
  2. The kitchen should always be located in the southeast. One should always face east while cooking.
  3. A place in the northeast is considered auspicious, and this direction is regarded as the direction of the gods. Worshipping here always brings virtue and divinity to the house.
  4. The bedroom should always face the southwest, which brings stability to married life.
  5. The bathroom and toilet should always be located in the west. They should not be located in the prayer room or the centre of the building.
  6. The living room should always be kept empty and clean. It should be placed in the centre, and heavy objects should never be kept there.
