The BCCI has completed preparations for the 2026 Women’s Premier League Mega Auction. However, the league suffered a major setback on auction day. A World Cup-winning player withdrew her name before the auction. She had performed exceptionally well for the Delhi Capitals in the league’s first three seasons. Her absence could be a significant setback for the Capitals, but this could potentially benefit the English player.
Why she is not in the auction?
Australia’s legendary left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Jess Jonassen has withdrawn her name from the 2026 Women’s Premier League mega auction. According to IANS reports, Jonassen informed the league of this information on Wednesday. Injury is the reason for Jess’s decision.
Jonassen was part of the Delhi Capitals team in the first three seasons of the Women’s Premier League, where she proved her mettle with impressive performances. In all three seasons, the Delhi Capitals team reached the final, but lost on all three occasions. Consequently, the Delhi team will make every effort to acquire its former players. The franchise could also attempt to re-sign Jess Jonassen.
With Jess Jonassen’s withdrawal, English superstar Sophie Ecclestone could be a major contender for franchises. Everyone needs a spin all-rounder in their team. South Africa’s Chloe Tryon could also be a potential contender. Chloe Tryon recently performed exceptionally well in the World Cup in India, making her a sought-after option. However, most franchises may now turn to Indian options, allowing them to fill the position of a match-finisher on a budget.
According to ESPNcricinfo “Jonassen, 33, has made a big impact in the WPL, winning five Player-of-the-Match awards. Only Harmanpreet Kaur has won more Player-of-the-Match awards (7) in the WPL. It is understood that Jonassen is recovering from a shoulder complaint she has been managing for some time.”
