Solar Pump Subsidy: The central and state governments are continuously making efforts to make irrigation accessible and affordable in the agricultural sector. The use of solar pumps is being promoted to reduce dependence on expensive electricity and diesel. To this end, the Madhya Pradesh government launched the Pradhan Mantri Krishak Mitra Surya Yojana this year, which aims to provide farmers with solar-based irrigation facilities at a highly subsidised rate. This scheme is particularly beneficial for farmers who face the burden of irrigation costs due to limited resources.
Major decision in the Council of Ministers meeting
The recent Council of Ministers meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, approved significant amendments to the provisions of this scheme. This decision is considered a major step towards providing farmers with higher-capacity solar pumps. Previously, farmers were provided solar pumps based on the capacity of their temporary electricity connection, but now they will have the option of pumps with a higher capacity. This change will prove extremely useful in areas where irrigation demand is high and existing capacity is insufficient.

Higher-capacity solar pumps will now be available
Under the new policy, farmers with a 3 HP temporary electricity connection will be able to obtain a 5 HP solar pump. Similarly, farmers with 5 HP will be able to choose pumps up to 7.5 HP. This facility is particularly beneficial for farmers with large land holdings or areas with deep water tables that require more powerful pumps. The government believes that increased capacity pumps will make irrigation more effective and time-efficient.
Up to 90% government subsidy
The Madhya Pradesh government has clarified that in the first phase of this scheme, priority will be given to farmers with temporary electricity connections and those in unelectrified areas. The government is providing a subsidy of up to 90% on solar pumps up to 7.5 HP capacity. Farmers will only have to contribute 10%. This assistance is a significant relief for farmers amid rising diesel and electricity costs, as installing solar pumps will significantly reduce irrigation costs and crop costs. This will make production more profitable and provide a better irrigation option for small and marginal farmers.
New Form of the Kusum-B Scheme
The Central Government’s popular Kusum-B Scheme has been implemented in Madhya Pradesh from January 24, 2025, with a new name and structure of Pradhan Mantri Krishak Mitra Surya Yojana. The scheme is being implemented by the Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam, which is responsible for the installation, monitoring, and operation of solar pumps across the state. The government hopes that the increased use of solar pumps will not only provide farmers with sustainable irrigation facilities but will also reduce the financial burden on electricity subsidies. This will also reduce line losses for power distribution companies.
