New Delhi: Cricket is often regarded as a game of unpredictable circumstances, where countless records are established. From the global stage to domestic tournaments, we have witnessed numerous records being set and broken. You may have even seen instances of six sixes or six fours being scored in a single over. However, if someone were to tell you that 22 runs were scored off a single delivery in cricket, you would likely be astonished. Yet, this is 100 per cent true. A Unique Feat in the Caribbean Premier League
Did you know that in the 2025 edition of the Caribbean Premier League, a match took place that is still remembered to this day? In this match, the names of two players were etched into the record books. One player set a world record for hitting three sixes off a single ball, while the other set an unwanted world record for conceding the highest number of runs—22—off a single delivery.
Oshane Thomas, who played for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 2019 and 2020 seasons of the Indian Premier League, became the first bowler in history to concede 22 runs off a single ball. Conversely, Romario Shepherd—who plays in the IPL for RCB—became the first batsman globally to hit three sixes off a single delivery. This record left everyone completely astounded.
The Day This Unique Record Was Set
The incident dates back to the 2025 edition of the Caribbean Premier League. This monumental record was established on the night of August 27, 2025, during a match played between the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the Saint Lucia Kings at the Saint Lucia Ground. In this match, having won the toss, the Guyana Amazon Warriors elected to bat first. Guyana had already lost five wickets with the score standing at 78 runs. Romario Shepherd and Iftikhar Ahmed were holding their ground at the crease. Shepherd Unleashes a Blitz
Oshane Thomas stepped up to bowl the 15th over for the Saint Lucia Kings. The first delivery was a dot ball. On the second ball, Romario smashed a four. The third delivery was called a no-ball. Romario was awarded a free hit; attempting to avoid conceding a big shot, Thomas ended up bowling a wide. The free hit remained in effect. Thomas bowled again, and Shepherd smashed a six. However, Thomas’s troubles only deepened at that moment. The umpire called this delivery a no-ball as well, granting Shepherd yet another free hit.
Benefiting from Three No-Balls
Oshane Thomas was visibly rattled. The very next delivery he bowled—amidst this mounting pressure—was also called a no-ball. Seizing the opportunity presented by the free hit, Shepherd smashed another six. Shepherd had now hit two sixes off the previous two deliveries. He was, once again, gifted another free hit opportunity. Thomas finally bowled a legal delivery next. Shepherd smashed a six off that one as well. Thus, a staggering total of 22 runs were scored off what was technically the third delivery of the over—an extraordinary sequence of events that has now gone down in the history of T20 cricket.
