Xiaomi is doing everything in its power to win the budget 5G market this summer. After news of its upcoming premium mid-rangers, a new report claims the Chinese tech giant is currently developing the standard Redmi 17 5G. Designed as an affordable, long-lasting device first and foremost, the Redmi 17 5G will be succeeding the Redmi 15 and skipping over the “16” in order to follow Xiaomi’s main flagship line. The new device is expected to debut alongside the Redmi Turbo 5 in a standalone launch event.
Redmi 17 5G: Specs and Features
The massive selling point of the upcoming Redmi 17 5G is without a doubt the sheer size of its power source. Reports reveal that the device will come with a high energy density battery that exceeds 7,000mAh. This places it firmly in the absolute top tier as far as battery life goes among phones in its class. Under the hood, it is rumored to use one of Qualcomm’s newest 4-series Snapdragon chipsets (likely the just-announced Snapdragon 4 Gen 4), to provide capable 5G connectivity without driving the price through the roof.
In terms of display, the Redmi 17 5G is expected to retain the massive 6.9-inch Full HD+ LCD display with high refresh rate from its predecessor, possibly topping out at 144Hz. The combination of a massive display and battery makes it perfect for both watching and delivering content for users who spend many hours away from a charging outlet. It will come with the latest Android 16-based HyperOS running on it for a blazing fast and extremely customizable UI with new AI functionalities.
When it comes to cameras, the hardware remains as basic as it gets for a budget smartphone. The rear setup will be headed by a single 50MP primary camera, which will likely produce great shots in good lighting, backed up by some basic secondary sensors. An 8MP selfie camera will be placed on the front of the device for video calls and selfies.
Redmi Turbo 5: The Performance Companion
The Redmi Turbo 5 will be launching alongside its more affordable sibling and aims at users who want a bit more raw power without burning too deep into their wallets. Though already launched in China, the Indian and Global variants are strongly expected to be rebranded Poco X8 Pro.
The Turbo 5 takes it up a notch with a more premium 6.59-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. The new processor will be MediaTek’s powerful new Dimensity 8500-Ultra, which is capable of pushing higher frame rates during long and graphically demanding sessions, such as intense gaming. Not only does the Turbo version lack on battery life though: it’s confirmed to feature an insane 7,560mAh battery with blazing fast 100W charging capabilities.
Pricing and Expected India Availability
Despite the fact that we still haven’t seen Xiaomi’s official teasers, reliable industry insiders are suggesting that the Redmi 17 5G and the Redmi Turbo 5 will officially be announced for the Indian market on June 18th, 2026. This is very soon after the premium Xiaomi 17T series will launch early next month.
