PM-WANI: Govt Launches Affordable Internet Plans QR Code-Based, Know the Details

PM WANI Scheme: The has made a significant move to ensure internet access reaches every part of the nation. On Tuesday, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) revealed several important updates to the public Wi-Fi initiative, PM-WANI.

These updates will enhance the ease of using public Wi-Fi throughout the country. Reports indicate that these modifications have been overseen by Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Minister of State Pemmasani Chandrashekhar. This initiative will primarily benefit students, travelers, and small businesses.

The internet will be accessible immediately after scanning the QR code.

Connecting to public Wi-Fi in locations such as railway stations, bus stands, and shopping malls has previously involved a lengthy login process. However, the government has now upgraded this to a more advanced and user-friendly system. With the new regulations, users can connect to public Wi-Fi simply by scanning a QR code. This approach is not only quick but also secure.

The government has introduced plans for 15, 30, and 60 minutes

Additionally, the government has rolled out various short-term plans to make public Wi-Fi access easier. These plans will be available in sachet-style formats with validity periods of 15, 30, or 60 minutes, and they are very affordable. Users can access this service at bus terminals, railway stations, malls, and transit hubs. (REF.)

Public Wi-Fi names will be updated

Changes have also been made to protect people from cyber fraud and other scams. To protect people from fake networks, the names of all fake hotspots will be changed. Official hotspots will now be mandated with the PMWANI branding. This will make it much easier to identify safe Wi-Fi.

To safeguard the public from cyber fraud and counterfeit networks posing as public Wi-Fi, the government has decided to rename all hotspots. Now, all official hotspots must feature the ‘PMWANI’ branding, enabling users to easily recognize authentic and secure Wi-Fi networks. The DoT has given all operators within the PM WANI framework eight weeks to adopt these new guidelines. This means that the entire advanced system will be functional nationwide by July 2026.
