Traffic Challan Update: Under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the road safety and traffic awareness campaigns conducted throughout the year by the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department have yielded positive results. A significant reduction in traffic rule violations has been recorded in 2025 compared to the previous year. According to departmental data, approximately four lakh fewer challans were issued in 2025 compared to 2024, indicating increased awareness among the public.

Number of Challans in 2024 vs. 2025

In a recently held review meeting, Transport Department officials stated that a total of 17,58,930 challans were issued in 2024, while this number decreased to 13,78,919 in 2025.  Revenue of approximately Rs. 454.49 crore was collected through these challans. Officials believe that strict enforcement and continuous awareness campaigns played a crucial role in this achievement.

Most Actions Taken for Not Wearing Helmets

In 2025, the highest number of challans were issued for two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets. 6,32,901 challans were issued in this category. Additionally, 1,33,189 cases of not wearing seatbelts were recorded. 14,535 driving licenses were also suspended for violating traffic rules.

Reduction in Overspeeding and Drunk Driving Cases

According to the data, a significant decrease has been observed in overspeeding cases. While 7,77,897 challans were issued for overspeeding in 2024, this number reduced to 3,30,171 in 2025. 3,611 cases of drunk driving were registered, while 56,079 challans were issued for driving on the wrong side of the road.

Strict Monitoring of Commercial Vehicles

The Transport Department also took strict action against commercial vehicles. 54,923 cases of overloading were registered. 11,892 cases of incorrect number plates and 1,226 cases of carrying passengers in goods vehicles were reported. Action was taken against 20,431 commercial vehicles for not installing speed-limiting devices.

Violations detected in special campaigns

During special checking campaigns, 36,773 cases of unregistered e-rickshaws were recorded in April. In May, 2,218 challans were issued against unauthorised passenger vehicles, and in June, 1,821 challans were issued for the commercial use of private vehicles. In September, 6,832 challans were issued against violating vehicles from other states, and in October, 5,073 challans were issued against dumpers and trucks without number plates.

Focus on digital surveillance in 2026

The Transport Department has informed that to further reduce road accidents in 2026, digital surveillance and awareness campaigns will be intensified. This has already begun with the National Road Safety Month, which started in January. During this period, the Transport Department is conducting a statewide campaign in collaboration with the Police, Public Works, Health, and Information Departments.

No Helmet No Fuel and Awareness in Schools

During the National Road Safety Month, the “No Helmet No Fuel” campaign for motorcyclists has been implemented across the state. Special vigilance is also being maintained at identified black spots and high-risk zones. Road safety awareness programs are also being organized in schools and colleges.
