This means the need to carry large amounts of cash or rely on foreign cards will largely be eliminated. India’s popular digital payment system, UPI, has now reached Cambodia, allowing Indians abroad to enjoy the same easy payment experience they enjoy at home.
Who started this facility together?
This initiative was jointly launched by India’s NIPL (NPCI Overseas Payments Limited) and Cambodia’s ACLEDA Bank Plc. The two organizations have connected Cambodia’s KHQR system with India’s UPI network, facilitating digital payments between the two countries.
How the new system will work?
Indians will be able to make payments by scanning the KHQR codes displayed on Cambodian shopkeepers and merchants using their UPI apps. The payment process will be exactly the same as in India. First, you’ll need to scan the QR code, then enter the amount you wish to pay. After that, enter your UPI PIN and complete the payment. This means that even abroad, payments will be processed similarly to domestic UPI transactions.
The facility will be accessible at lakhs of shops
Once the new system is in place, Indian tourists will have the ability to make UPI payments at more than 4 million retail outlets in Cambodia. This will particularly help those visiting popular spots like Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville. Hotels, restaurants, taxis, shopping stores, and various other businesses in these well-frequented tourist areas will be equipped to accept UPI payments.
One of the major hurdles when traveling internationally is handling payments. Foreign cards frequently face issues, transaction fees can be steep, and currency exchange can incur additional costs. This UPI feature can resolve many of these challenges and provide a host of advantages.
