ATM Withdrawals May Soon Get Costlier! Check Latest Banking Update

: Big news for everyone. The ongoing conflict between Iran and the US is exerting pressure on fuel prices within the country. This month, retail prices for petrol and diesel have risen four times, surpassing Rs 7 per liter. This surge in prices is now impacting various other sectors as well. There are signs that ATM withdrawals might also see a rise in costs. This increase is likely attributed to the higher expenses associated with delivering cash to ATMs.

The Currency Cycle Association (CCA), which represents companies involved in cash delivery to ATMs, has reached out to the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) requesting a reassessment of their rates. The escalating fuel prices and rising worker wages have driven up the operational costs for cash logistics service providers by as much as 20 percent, prompting the sector to seek an increase in the ATM management fees charged by banks. Should this request be granted, ATM withdrawals could become pricier.

The burden of rising costs is becoming hard to manage

The CCA has stated that the operational expenses in the cash logistics industry are climbing swiftly, making it crucial to adjust the fee structure with banks promptly. The letter highlights that the ongoing rise in fuel prices has led to increased costs for cash delivery vehicles, while many states have also significantly raised minimum wages. For instance, in Haryana, the minimum wage for unskilled workers has jumped by approximately 35 percent to Rs 15,220 per month, and in Uttar Pradesh, it has risen by about 20 percent to Rs 13,690 per month.

Additionally, legal costs related to insurance, technology, and compliance have also surged, further straining overall expenses. CCA Secretary General US Paliwal mentioned that efficiency measures, such as demand-based cash supply and routing for ATMs, are being put into practice, but these efforts are insufficient to counterbalance such a significant rise in costs. He emphasized that absorbing these additional expenses is no longer feasible, and timely adjustments to the fee structures with banks are crucial.
