Toll rules will change from November 15th, providing significant relief to the public

Toll Plaza Rules: A significant change is underway for drivers traveling on national highways across the country. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has implemented a new toll payment system, effective November 15th, 2025. Under this change, those paying in cash will now have to pay a higher fee, while those making digital payments will receive relief. The government aims to implement a completely digital and transparent payment system at toll plazas across the country.

What is the new toll rule?

The government has clarified that if a vehicle passes through a toll plaza without a FASTag and pays in cash, it will have to pay double the toll. However, if the same driver pays through a digital medium such as UPI, debit card, or mobile wallet, they will only have to pay 1.25 times the toll.

Suppose the normal toll fee at a toll plaza is ₹100. If your FASTag is active, you will only have to pay ₹100. If your FASTag is deactivated and you pay with cash, the fee will increase to ₹200. However, if you pay digitally, you will only have to pay ₹125. The government is thus taking a major step towards encouraging digital payments and reducing cash transactions.

What is the government’s objective?

According to the Ministry of Road Transport, the purpose of this rule change is to make the toll collection process more transparent. The ministry believes that paying digitally will not only reduce toll congestion but also save passengers both time and fuel. Furthermore, this step will also help reduce corruption and increase revenue transparency.

Who will get the most relief?

This rule brings relief especially to drivers whose FASTag is not working or has expired due to a technical reason. Previously, they had to pay double the toll, but now they can avoid this penalty by paying 1.25 times the toll through digital means.
