Govt reduced Petrol, Diesel, ATF Export Duties
As per govt notification, The export duty on petrol has been cut to Rs 1.5 per litre, while the duty on diesel has been reduced to Rs 13.5 per litre. Export duty on aviation turbine fuel has also been lowered to Rs 9.5 per litre.
Rates are updated every 15 days (a two-week period). These updates are determined by the average global prices of crude oil, petrol, diesel, and ATF. The government usually assesses international oil prices every two weeks and sets the export duty on petrol, diesel, and ATF accordingly.
However, the same existing taxes will continue to apply to petrol and diesel available to the public; there are no new additions or reductions. It’s important to understand that export duty is a form of indirect tax levied by a country’s government on goods sent abroad (to other nations).
When was the last update made?
Export duties in the form of Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED) and Road and Infrastructure Cess (RIC) on petrol, diesel, and ATF exports were first introduced on March 27, 2026. The government indicated that this measure was intended to ensure a sufficient domestic supply of petroleum products amid high export levels, especially during a time when the ongoing conflict in West Asia was affecting global energy markets. Officials mentioned that these duties are reviewed and adjusted every two weeks based on current international market conditions. The last update took effect on May 16, 2026.
The new rates, starting June 1, will impose a duty of Rs 1.5 per liter on petrol exports. This entire amount will be collected as special additional excise duty, while the road and infrastructure cess will not be applied. The Modi government has established an export duty of Rs 9.5 per liter for aviation turbine fuel. This duty will be collected solely as special additional excise duty. The revised rates will be in place for the next two weeks until further changes are announced during the upcoming review.
