The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has extended the deadline for Central Government employees to join the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). This is for employees who joined service between April 1, 2025, and August 31, 2025.
The Ministry of Finance, Government of India, notified UPS for eligible employees on 24.01.2025 (Notification No. F. No. FX-1/3/2024 PR). The PFRDA works under the Ministry of Finance.
Opportunity to Join UPS Extended Until September 30, 2025
The Central Government has extended the one-time option to join UPS. This is for employees who joined service between April 1, 2025, and August 31, 2025, and who have chosen the National Pension System (NPS). Employees can join UPS until September 30, 2025, same as the other eligible categories.
Employees who join UPS can later switch back to NPS. This gives them more choice and helps plan their post-retirement financial security.
UPS is a pension scheme by the Government of India. It is part of NPS and is for Central Government employees. The scheme gives assured, inflation-linked retirement benefits for long-term security and predictable pensions.
