EPFO’s major change: How beneficial are the new PF withdrawal rules for you?

EPFO Update 2025: The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has significantly simplified and made the PF withdrawal rules more flexible, providing relief to its more than 300 million members. This important decision was taken at a CBT meeting chaired by Labor Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. According to the Labor Ministry, these new rules aim to make the lives of EPF members more convenient and provide them with better control over their funds.

100% Withdrawal Facility Now Available

Under the new EPFO rules, members will now be able to withdraw up to 100% of their entire balance, which includes both employee and employer contributions. Previously, members could withdraw the entire balance only in the event of retirement or unemployment. The old rules allowed for withdrawals of 75% after one month of leaving the job and the remaining 15% after two months.

Complex rules for partial withdrawals simplified

Previously, there were several complex provisions for partial withdrawals from EPF, which made the process difficult for members. Now, the Central Board of Trustees has eliminated these 13 separate provisions and consolidated them into a streamlined framework. According to the new rules, withdrawal needs are now divided into three major categories: essential needs such as illness, education, marriage, housing needs, and special circumstances. This will make the process easier for members to understand and follow.

Withdrawal limits for education and marriage increased

Previously, only three partial withdrawals were allowed for marriage and education purposes. Now, the EPFO has increased this limit to five times for marriage and ten times for education. This change brings relief to employees who wish to use their PF funds for their children’s education or family events.

Eliminated the need to provide a reason

Previously, when withdrawing from EPF, members were required to provide a reason for withdrawing funds. In special circumstances, such as a natural disaster, pandemic, or the closure of an establishment, providing a reason was mandatory. This requirement has now been completely removed. This means that members can now make partial withdrawals as needed without providing a reason. This has made the process more transparent and simple.
