Digital Currency for Ration: The Delhi government is introducing various schemes for women, farmers, and people from economically weaker sections. The state government is making every effort to assist the general public in every possible way. In this context, ration card holders will no longer need to stand in long queues to receive their grain subsidies.
The Delhi government has decided that the subsidy amount due to beneficiaries will now be transferred directly into digital wallets linked to their unique identification. This initiative will save a significant amount of time for ration card holders and spare them from unnecessary inconvenience. This entire process will be facilitated through the digital currency issued by the RBI.
Food and Supplies Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that digital currency will now be transferred to beneficiaries via a secure digital wallet system. This amount can be utilised to purchase grains and essential commodities from Fair Price Shops (FPS). Sharing a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa wrote: “Through the CBDC—or Central Bank Digital Currency—the ration distribution system will be made even more convenient.
For those who apply for this facility, the digital currency will be sent directly to their mobile phones, which they can then use to purchase their rations.” The government has also raised the annual income ceiling for eligibility for a ration card to ₹2.5 lakh.

How will the digital currency work?
The CBDC is, in essence, a ‘Digital Rupee’ that holds the exact same legal status as physical cash. The government will first determine the specific subsidy amount due to a beneficiary and subsequently transfer it directly to their digital wallet. The most significant advantage of this system is that it will put a complete curb on malpractices and irregularities often associated with grain distribution at ration shops. Now, a digital record of every transaction will be maintained, accessible to anyone for verification at their convenience.

Meanwhile, Delhi Cabinet Minister Rekha Gupta stated: “Now, families with an annual income of up to ₹2.5 lakh will also be eligible to receive free rations from the Delhi government.” “During today’s Cabinet meeting, a decision was taken to raise the EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) income ceiling for ration card eligibility from ₹1.20 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh, with the aim of extending the benefits of the ration scheme to the maximum number of families possible.” Through the new CBDC-based system, ration benefits will be credited directly to people’s accounts.
