Air Travel to Get Costlier, Aviation Fuel Prices Up Rs 9,000 in Just 3 Months

Air Ticket Price : Big news for Air traveler’s. Aviation turbine fuel (ATF), which is what flights use, has seen a price hike of over Rs 5,000 starting today, December 1st. Prices for ATF have gone up from Delhi to Mumbai and from Kolkata to Chennai. This marks the third month in a row that oil marketing companies have raised ATF prices. On Monday, the average increase across the country was Rs 5,113.75 per kilolitre. Over the past three months, ATF has become about Rs 9,000 more expensive. This situation raises questions about whether airlines like Air India and IndiGo will pass these costs onto passengers. However, the central government keeps an eye on airfares.

How much has ATF’s price gone up?

With the latest hike, ATF prices are now Rs 99,676.77 per kilolitre in Delhi, Rs 102,371.02 in Kolkata, Rs 93,281.04 in Mumbai, and Rs 103,301.80 in Chennai. This will lead to higher costs for airlines.

Just so you know, government oil marketing companies (IOC, BPCL, HPCL) set the ATF prices on the first of each month based on international prices and the rupee-dollar exchange rate.

ATF has gone up by Rs 8,943 over the last 3 months.

This marks the third month in a row that companies have raised ATF prices. Back in November, the increase was around Rs 777/kL. In October, it jumped by Rs 3,052.5/kL. So, in total, ATF has become Rs 8,943.25 more expensive in just three months. But let’s not forget, there was a drop of Rs 1,308.41/kL in September.

In November, ATF prices saw an increase of about 1%, bringing the total to Rs 94,543.02 per kilolitre. October’s hike was roughly 3.3%. Before that, there was a 1.4% decrease on September 1st.

This rise in ATF prices is likely to add more financial strain on airlines, as fuel makes up about 40% of their overall operating expenses. It’s being suggested that airlines might pass these rising costs onto passengers. However, there’s no news yet on whether air ticket prices will also go up because of these increased costs. The Aviation Ministry has been regularly reminding everyone to keep air ticket prices in check.
