Aadhaar Card Update: A major change is underway in the rules related to Aadhaar identity verification in India. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is preparing to implement a new rule by the end of December 2025, after which no private entity will be able to verify someone’s identity using Aadhaar without registration. This change will have the greatest impact on the hotel, travel, and logistics industries. This change will be especially significant for unmarried couples, who previously submitted a photocopy of Aadhaar for hotel check-in.

UIDAI Registration Will Be Mandatory
According to the new rules, hotels, OYO, MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, event management companies, gated societies, and logistics companies will be required to register with UIDAI as an Offline Verification Seeking Entity (OVSE). Only after completing the registration will they be able to use Aadhaar for identity verification. With this, the old process of providing a physical copy of Aadhaar, a WhatsApp photo, or a photocopy will be eliminated.
Verification through QR code scanning
After the new rule comes into effect, verification will be completed at the hotel counter by simply scanning a QR code. This process will be completed in just a few seconds through the mAadhaar app or the official UIDAI app. This method will not share your complete information with the hotel or any other organisation. Only your name and photo will be displayed on the screen. This will maintain your privacy and eliminate the risk of data leaks.

New technology will enhance security
UIDAI is also incorporating modern technologies such as face liveness detection and contactless fingerprinting to prevent fraudulent identification and deepfakes. UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar stated that this step is aimed at making Aadhaar data more secure and privacy-friendly. By November 2025, more than 250 hotel chains and logistics companies had been trained on this.
When will the new rule be implemented?
According to UIDAI, this rule will be fully implemented by the beginning of 2026. Currently, it is undergoing beta testing. With the new system, no hotel will be able to keep your Aadhaar copy. Furthermore, the check-in process for couples will become easier and safer. Now, simply keep the mAadhaar app updated, and by showing the QR code, you will be granted entry within seconds.
