Following India’s poor performance in the Test series, calls for change within the Indian team have intensified. There were also talks of removing head coach Gautam Gambhir. However, the BCCI has clarified its stance on this matter. The BCCI stated that it has no intention of replacing the head coach at this time. Gambhir will remain the coach in all three formats.
Meanwhile, India suffered another Test series defeat at home. South Africa won in Guwahati on November 26th, completing a clean sweep of the series against India. This was their second Test series defeat at home in just over a year, raising questions about the performance of the Indian team’s players.
India will need to perform at their best to keep their hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final alive. India now needs consistent performers in the current squad. Improvements are needed in all departments, and some capable players need to return to the Test team to strengthen experience and stability. There are three players who could be included in the squad.
These 3 players can help India to regain momentum
Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad has been a run-making machine in domestic cricket. His 514 runs in his last eight innings, at an average of 85.66, should make any selector think. Gaikwad scored 201 runs in three innings against South Africa A. He has been included in the ODI team. However, he is also a strong Test player. He has scored several centuries and half-centuries while playing for Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy.
Mohammed Shami
Veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami is one of India’s best Test bowlers, with 229 wickets in 64 Test matches. However, he has been out of the team due to injuries and fitness concerns. Shami made a brilliant comeback in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, taking 20 wickets in four matches and displaying unmatched control.
Rajat Patidar
Madhya Pradesh batsman Rajat Patidar is one of the most deserving candidates for a return to the Test team. Although he has only played three Test matches for India, his domestic record tells an interesting story. Patidar led Central Zone to the Duleep Trophy title.
