However, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has come out in Gambhir’s support. Gavaskar questioned whether Gambhir deserved credit for winning the Champions Trophy or the Asia Cup, and why he is being held solely responsible for the defeats.
Sunil Gavaskar said, “Gambhir is the coach. A coach can only prepare the team, but the players have to perform on the field. My question to all those blaming Gambhir for this defeat is: what did you do when Team India won the Champions Trophy under Gambhir’s leadership? What did you do when the Indian team won the Asia Cup under his supervision? Now you are saying that he should be removed from his position. Did you say then that Gambhir’s contract should be extended and he should be given a permanent contract for ODIs and T20s? You said nothing of the sort. You only look at the coach when the team performs poorly.”
This was the first time in Indian cricket history that Team India had lost a Test match by a margin of more than 350 runs. In the second Test, South Africa crushed the Indian team by 408 runs. This was the Indian team’s biggest defeat in terms of runs.
This is the first time in 20 years that a single batsman from Team India has failed to score a century in an entire Test series. The Indian batsmen were a complete failure in the series, and Team India suffered the consequences. With two consecutive Test defeats, the Indian team’s path to the World Test Championship final has become increasingly difficult.
