On the evening of Sunday (November 23), BCCI announced the squad for the upcoming India vs South Africa ODI series. All cricket fans were eagerly waiting to see who would the captain of the series as Shubman Gill injured, and out of action for now.
India’s regular ODI captain, Shubman Gill, is not playing in this series due to injury. He suffered a neck spasm against South Africa. He subsequently retired hurt and returned to the pavilion. He then missed the second Test for the same reason. KL Rahul has now assumed the captaincy in his place. Rahul has previously served in this role for the team in ODIs. He has captained the team in 12 ODIs, winning eight and losing four.
Shreyas Iyer has also not been included in the Indian squad. He is currently recovering from injury. Tilak Varma may be included in his place in the playing eleven. Star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been rested from ODIs. Keeping next year’s T20 World Cup in mind, Bumrah is currently focusing on T20 cricket. Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been in good form for the India A team, has been included in the squad.
The first ODI between India and South Africa will be played on December 30 at Ranchi. The second ODI will be played on December 3 at Raipur. The final and third ODI of the series will be played in Visakhapatnam on December 6.
